In 1943 Walter Pepper began a printing company in the garage of his home on Waverly Street in what was then southeast Memphis. The business design was to do small job printing with emphasis on personalized stationery and wedding invitations. During the years at 68 Court Street, across from Gerber’s Tearoom and New Front Street. Service was the watch word. A bride was able to place her wedding order in the a.m. and pick it up late that afternoon. Often projects required the use of the California Case of hand type to obtain a desired script. During the early 1950’s Mr. Pepper saw a new opportunity for marketing his products and services. He began to create albums of samples. These catalogs were marketed through Department Stores, Office Supply stores and Printing Companies. The “For Resale” soon became the greater part of Pepper Printing Company. To separate the two divisions of the company, the term Pepperite was used for the wholesale portion of the business. By the mid 60’s Pepperite had become a registered trademark.
Today the Pepperite "niche" is to produce high quality engraving, foil stamping, printing and thermography.
